SIGN THE PETITION TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD
Granite Construction, a $3 billion California company listed on the NY Stock Exchange, is making a brazen attempt to force Salt Lake County to accept a huge gravel pit/limestone mine in the heart of Parley’s Canyon. As you likely are aware, Salt Lake Valley residents are overwhelmingly opposed to this project. A petition of opposition has been signed by over 25,000 Utah residents, by far the most of any environmental petition in the state’s history. The Salt Lake County Council has unanimously voted to eliminate these open-mine operations from our foothill and canyon areas. But in response, Granite Construction is doubling down on its intent, defying the common good and the will of the public. Granite’s strategy now is two pronged: to convince the courts to rule in their favor, and thanks to hefty campaign donations, they have already had Republican legislators pressure the state agency DOGM to approve their application for a permit.
All Utahns should be outraged that a wealthy land speculator, Jesse Lassley, has teamed up with a giant California corporation in exploiting weak Utah environmental laws to bully their way to more profits. Their mine would consume vast amounts of water, contaminate two nearby reservoirs, tear up our watershed, pollute our air, blanket the canyon with more dust, undermine public health, and threaten the safety of canyon residents and their homes. And it will permanently destroy one of Utah's most important natural landscapes, at the gateway to our capital city.
Lastly, this project is in direct conflict with Granite’s proclaimed environmental commitments to its shareholders.
For all these reasons, we demand Granite Construction withdraw their mine application.
In two easy steps you can sign this petition and send a letter directly to Granite management.
